What to spend your gems on
I apologize for the sloppy ninjaization in this tip but hopefully you get the idea I'm trying to go for.
From the start: DO NOT USE YOUR GEMS!!!! You will need 4,000 to buy the last 3 builder huts. This should be achievable by TH6 if you go for the achievements in the game (especially join the crystal league, get 1250 trophies, etc - these achievements are worth A LOT). Once you finally buy your last 3 builder huts and have 5 total, what do you spend your gems on? Spending them to make upgrades happen quickly is a waste and uses up your resources causing you to spend the gems on resources so you can keep building. Instead, boost everything.
Instead of spending the ninjadreds of gems on gold, elixir, dark elixir... I found it is A LOT cheaper and A LOT better to boost your barracks, gold mines, elixir collectors, and dark elixir drills. Your barraks will be boosted for 2 hours to have some time on your hands! Go raiding like crazy! I usually do 1 barracks with barbarians and 3 with archers. Don't be scared to use them all up because by the time you come back, you'll have another army ready to go (be sure to keep refilling the barracks as it takes 5 seconds for a barbarian to complete and 6.25 seconds for archers). I try to find bases with AT LEAST 100k of each that is easily stealable outside (collectors and mines filled and storages near empty - basically all the loot is in the collectors and mines, not in the storages and most people leave their mines and collectors out so it's pay day for you!). Just keep doing this for the full 2 hours and spend if you have to. The highest I have obtained in these 2 hours was 5.2 million gold and 5.7 million elixir. The lowest I've ever gotten was about 1.8 million gold and 1.7 million elixir. For 2 hours of your time and only spending a few gems? Totally worth it compared to spending ninjadreds in the store itself. Save yo some gems and do it this way.

I'm a TH8 on the account I've tried this on and have 1,293 gems and have never spend a single penny on this game, have 5 builder huts, and always keep my builders busy and my gem numbers keep going up instead of down. I constantly boost and keep going for achievements and clear all the trees and stuff from my land as well. Boost when you have time to be on the game for awhile, don't boost while your away, things will build up.
When you have the 2 or 3 hours to sit there and raid and make an army over and over again, boost everything: barracks, gold mines, elixir collectors, and dark elixir drills. If you're coming online to just collect stuff and do whatever and don't have the time, DO NOT BOOST ANYTHING. It's a waste. You might as well boost your collectors and mines while you have the time to be online since you'll be using the resources anyway. While you're away everything will just add up anyway even for when you hop on for a few minutes. There's no point into boosting. Try to boost twice a week for best results or whenever needed.
