The points are that: - it's harder for attacker to release troops to a certain target; - let trees and other plants grow out of the borders only; - many places you can put gig.bombs/Teslas so attacker cannot be sure about it's placement. The second point is important if you want to have x-mas tree rows on the borders, you will not miss a thing. TH is not protected at all but base is well-protected if attacker decides to wipe you out.
